SureSmile Clear Aligners in overland park

What Are Clear Aligners?

Clear Aligners are a way to correct misaligned teeth with a clear and removable oral appliance made of thermoplastic material.

Gentle force is exerted onto the teeth so that they gradually shift through the weeks and months. This treatment is preferred by adults who want to correct orthodontic problems without drawing attention to their teeth or disrupting their smile with metal.

You will change your aligners every 2 weeks (sometimes as fast as every week!) to continually shift your teeth until they reach their final straight alignment. The average length of treatment varies but can last anywhere from 3 months to 2 years depending on the severity of your case. Contact us at The Art of Dentistry to schedule a consultation.

Consultation

Dr. Kirkegaard will examine your teeth and take x-rays to determine if you’re a good candidate for SureSmile. If you have bite problems or require more complex tooth movements, you will need attachments. If you are located in Louisburg, please give us a call for a SureSmile consultation. We are only a short drive away.

Impressions & Attachments

Digital Impressions are taken of your teeth and are sent to SureSmile.

Digital Mapping & Aligner Fabrication

The impression of your teeth creates a highly accurate 3D model of your mouth for digital planning of your treatment. We create your aligners based on a digital model of your teeth and how your teeth need to move.

Aligner Pick-Up

After a few weeks, your aligners will be ready to be picked up and you can begin your treatment.  If you require attachments to help your aligners do their job, we will bond composite resin buttons to your teeth at this appointment.

Wear Your Aligners

You will need to wear your aligners for a minimum of 22 hours per day. You will attend regular checkups about every 6 weeks, where you will receive additional aligners. Aligners need to be changed every 2 weeks. Many patients can even change them every week.

Attachment Removal & Retention

Once your teeth have completely shifted, if you had attachments placed on your teeth, these will be removed. A retainer will be created based on your final alignment and you will need to wear this to prevent your teeth from shifting. You will wear your retainers, “nighttime for a lifetime”!

Problems That SureSmile Fixes

Crooked/Misaligned Teeth

SureSmile places gentle pressure on teeth so that they continuously shift into proper alignment over time. As long as you wear your aligners for 22 hours per day, your teeth will continue to straighten.

In some cases, if teeth need to be rotated past a certain point, you may require attachments that anchor the aligners and help place extra force on specific teeth. SureSmile is best able to correct minor to moderately crooked teeth.

Gaps

If you have gaps between your teeth, SureSmile can close them by shifting the teeth closer to each other. SureSmile is very effective at closing smaller and moderately sized gaps, but very large gaps may respond better to traditional braces.

Overcrowding

When there are too many teeth for the available jaw space in the mouth, teeth can overlap and interfere with your ability to properly clean them and may even cause speech problems. SureSmile can correct overcrowding by straightening teeth that are pressing against the surrounding teeth. By straightening your alignment, teeth will no longer run into each other.

Bite Problems

Suresmile can correct a variety of bite problems, including underbites, overbites, open bites, and crossbites. The use of attachments and elastics pulls the jaws into the proper alignment.
