What Are Veneers?

Veneers are ultra-thin covers that are bonded to the surface of the tooth. Porcelain veneers help to alter tooth position, shape, size, and color. Porcelain veneers don’t stain or discolor with regular cleanings, exams, and proper at-home care.

With a set of veneers from Dr. Kory Kirkegaard at The Art of Dentistry, you can cover up flaws in your smile including stains, misshapen teeth, minor chips, and so much more. How It Works: The Veneer Process

Cosmetic consultation

First, you’ll meet with Dr. Kirkegaard to discuss all of your options for transforming your smile. We offer a wide variety of cosmetic treatments at The Art of Dentistry, and Dr. Kirkegaard will work with you to determine whether veneers are the best choice for your unique situation.

Tooth prep & veneer fitting

After we’ve developed a custom treatment plan for you and your goals, you’ll come back to our office to have your teeth prepared for veneers. Dr. Kirkegaard will clean and numb your mouth, then remove a thin layer of enamel from each tooth that’s getting a veneer. This ensures your new veneers fit your smile perfectly. Once that’s done, Dr. Kirkegaard will take impressions and images of your teeth.  The amount of tooth that is removed is ultra-conservative for veneers!

Designing your veneers

Next, Dr. Kirkegaard will send your home with a set of temporary veneers. He will send your impressions to a wonderful cosmetic dental lab. A Master Ceramist will turn these impressions into a set of durable, lifelike porcelain veneers and send them back to The Art of Dentistry. It usually takes a few weeks for us to get your final set of veneers.

Final veneer placement

Once we receive your porcelain veneers, you’ll come back for one last appointment. Dr. Kirkegaard will remove your temporaries, prep your teeth, then check your veneers to make sure they fit perfectly. Then, he will bond your new veneers to your teeth permanently. After final polishing, Dr. Kirkegaard will send you home to enjoy your new smile.

Versatile Treatment

With a set of veneers, you can treat multiple cosmetic issues with your smile all at once. This includes things like teeth stains and uneven teeth, as well as slightly-crooked teeth, misshapen teeth, minor chips, and more.

Long-Lasting Results

Veneers typically last at least 15-30 years, and many patients are able to keep their veneers for much longer with proper care and good oral hygiene. Veneers don’t stain, either, so your new smile will look gorgeous for years to come.

No Special Care Needed

One of the benefits of veneers is that they require minimal special care. Just brush your teeth twice a day, floss once per day, and see Dr. Kirkegaard for a checkup every six months. During your preventive appointment in Overland Park, Dr. Kirkegaard will check on your veneers and your teeth to make sure everything looks good.

Boost Your Confidence

Lastly and most importantly, transforming your teeth with a set of veneers can completely change how you feel about yourself and your smile. With your new veneers, you won’t have to feel self-conscious when you smile, hide your teeth when you laugh, or avoid eating around others. You’ll feel confident and proud of your smile once again!

How long do veneers last?

Veneers are a popular dental solution for those seeking a perfect smile, but how long can you expect them to last? The lifespan of veneers can vary significantly depending on several factors, such as the type of veneer, the quality of the dental work, and the patient's oral hygiene habits.

Porcelain veneers, which are the most common type used in cosmetic dentistry, typically last between 10 to 15 years. These veneers are highly durable and resistant to stains, making them a long-lasting solution for enhancing the appearance of your teeth. However, they can occasionally chip or break, especially if you frequently consume hard foods or grind your teeth.

Composite veneers, on the other hand, typically last between 5 to 7 years. They are less durable than porcelain veneers but are also less expensive and easier to repair.

Regardless of the type of veneer, maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial for extending their lifespan. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups can help keep your veneers in good condition and ensure they last as long as possible.

How much do veneers cost in Kansas?

The cost of veneers can vary widely depending on several factors, including the type of veneer, the complexity of the procedure, and the dentist's expertise. In Kansas, the cost of veneers typically ranges from $1,000 to $2,500 per tooth for porcelain veneers, and $250 to $1,500 per tooth for composite veneers.

It's important to note that most dental insurance plans do not cover the cost of veneers, as they are considered a cosmetic procedure. However, some dentists offer payment plans or financing options to help make the procedure more affordable.

What happens to teeth under veneers?

Before veneers are placed, a small amount of enamel is removed to make room for the veneer. This process is irreversible, meaning that once you get veneers, you will always need to have veneers or another form of dental restoration.

After the enamel is removed, your natural teeth underneath the veneers will remain alive and healthy. However, they will be more sensitive to temperature and more susceptible to decay, so it's essential to maintain good oral hygiene practices.

Veneers are bonded to your natural teeth using a strong dental cement, providing a protective layer that helps prevent decay and damage. However, if the veneer is damaged or falls off, the underlying tooth can become exposed and vulnerable to decay.

Can you get cavities with veneers?

While veneers themselves cannot get cavities, the natural tooth underneath the veneer can still be susceptible to decay, especially at the border where the veneer meets the tooth. Therefore, it's crucial to maintain good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups.

If a cavity does develop underneath a veneer, the veneer may need to be removed so the dentist can treat the decay. In some cases, the veneer can be re-bonded to the tooth after the cavity has been treated, but in other cases, a new veneer may need to be made.

Remember, the best way to prevent cavities and other dental problems is through regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene practices. Even with veneers, it's essential to take good care of your teeth and gums to maintain your oral health.
